We Thought We Were Helping

One thing I didn’t include in this week’s post is how much I still think about those years when we constantly told our son not to scratch.

At the time, we genuinely thought we were helping.

We saw the damage the scratching was causing and wanted to protect his skin.

What we didn’t understand was how intense eczema itch can be.

We treated it more like a habit than a symptom.

Looking back now, I suspect some of our words unintentionally created shame around something he had very little control over.

Because my mother was my family too.

The line felt a little uncomfortable.

A little guilty.
